Company A, 49th Regiment of NC Troops |
This unit was raised and enlisted of troops from McDowell and Rutherford Counties. The company functioned as part of the regiment, formed in McDowell County in March 1862, for the entirety of the war. General Robert Ransom served as the Commander of the 49th. Its exploits are reported as part of the regimental history. He served with this unit until transferred to the Reserve Corp in July or August of 1864
Private Smart's descendant informs us he is buried at Double Shoals Baptist Church in Cleveland County, NC.
